Skatepark of Baltimore Design Meeting

As a group, we ride and skate at the skatepark in Hampden a good amount. I personally have been going there since it was just a paved lot with plastic launch ramps. Since then it has gone through a lot of changes and the rumors of a concrete park seem to be coming to fruition. There is a meeting this Wednesday. It's open to the public and representatives of the design and concrete firms will be there as well. So please join me in advocating for allowing bikes at the new park on the first of December at 6:30 right by the skatepark 1221 W. 36th st.

Weekend Bike Happenings

This year's holiday weekend has a few cycling events for those of us staying in town. Friday night is the monthly Critical Mass which meets at 7pm at the Washington Monument in Mt. Vernon. It's always a blast so go out and meet some new people while burning off that Thanksgiving Dinner.

Saturday is the Second Annual Cranksgiving. A nice long ride from Ellicott City to Annapolis and back, part of which is along the lovely B&A trail. It's roughly a 70 mile round trip at a mild pace. here is the route and get more info from the facebook page here.

Lastly, Sunday is Murder Sessions. So come on out and shred on your bike, whatever type it may be. We'll be meeting at Hold Fast HQ at 1pm.

I highly suggest buying a pair of long johns if you don't already have them. Everyone agreed last week that we all wanted to go well on through the winter, AS WELL AS THE CRITICAL MASSES. Six Pack Rides have never been seasonal so why start now? The only thing we did plan on doing a little differently is maybe hit up a few bars because standing around in parks can get cold, I mean our other option is to just not stand around as long. Maybe this coming week I'll get the 8oz pony bottles as opposed to tall boys. Sorry for the sloppy flyer I have to go to work.

This Saturday we're hosting a special Murder Sessions before MICA's Bike Fest/Life Cycles screening event. Meet up at 1PM at Penn Station in front of that goofy man-woman sculpture. Not fixed exclusive, all bikes are welcome, come out on your BMX or mountain bike or whatever! Meet other riders in the city and bring your friends. We'll ride to several spots in the city then stop by the Washington Monument around 5PM to meet up with others who want to ride to MICA as a group. The weather should be great!

Second, I wanted to make it to a few check points to get pictures, but I got a flat on my way to the first one. AWESOME! Sorry that didn't work out. I had to walk for like 20 minutes...

Velocipede Bike Clinic Series: Wheels

My wheels are stressed just about every time I ride, from sloppy tricks, to hideous Baltimore pot holes. I'm not the best at truing them so I will be attending Velocipede's bike clinic series on wheels on Monday the 25th. They hold the clinic series at the shop (4 w. Lanvale St.) every other Monday and they are free! So take advantage of this and all their other 2 hour clinic series classes and get your bike in tip top shape.

A Lil' Bit of the Atlanta Bike Battle

Last weekend a few of us rented a van and made the trip down to Georgia for the Loose Nuts Atlanta Bike Battle. Chris put us all up and we had a great time. The layout for the competition was well designed for fixed gears so some big tricks went down. We rode a little street the next day and despite soreness people were still going hard. This video shows the first two rounds of the comp as filmed by Michelle. Hopefully we'll see some of the final round and some photos as well.

Shop Gentei Race/Block Party

Sunday 10-10-10 at 1010 Morton St. was Shop Gentei's block party and alley cat. I must say, it was a good day for the Murder Sessions crew to be in ATL so I could try and capture some fun at the race and party. I hung with Kyle and Eugene at the first check point where some crazy dude was sweeping up piss and butting in to every conversation we had. When the riders got there they had to do 10 sit ups, and 10 push ups while Gene counted and crack head kept yelling out random numbers. The first check point always gets bum rushed so while it was during the Fells Point antique sale, many middle aged couples gathered around to watch the chaos and take cell phone pictures for facebook. We then went back to the shop to hang and dig in to a 30 pack of high life and watch all the riders hit the shop as it was every other check point. Chris got hit by a car, but it only got his back wheel, he's fine and he bought a set of wheels off someone hanging out and was back up in an hour. Later on, I don't know where it came from but someone had a hot air balloon and set it off in to the night. It was a fun day of skateboards, bikes, motorcycles, motorcycle drag races, music, beer and lots of friends. Check the Set...

Halloween Weekend is...

Great for cyclists in Baltimore. Why? Well because there is Friday the 29th which happens to be the last Friday of the month so Critical Mass is on. They meet at Charles and Monument (by the Washington Monument) and the ride starts at 7:00. Wear a costume!

Saturday is Nate E's B'more Spooky Halloween Ride, a follow up to his successful Moonlight Madness Ride. The plan is to go on a courteous tour of some of the spookier spots in Baltimore including cemetaries and Poe's grave. Meet at War Memorial Plaza (400 E. Fayette St) at 6:30. Wear a costume!

That leaves Sunday. As per usual, Murder Sessions will be going down. We will probably meet at 36th and Chestnut at 1pm. Then later that evening is "Bmore Fixed Presents Halloween the Alley Cat" which is going to be huge! A lot of great companies are supporting this race and it's looking like it will turn out to be one of the most fun all inclusive races Baltimore has ever seen. So don't sleep on it...Who knows, you may walk away with an incredible prize like a complete bike, or some slick cycling knickers, maybe a messenger bag, or a new set of tires, perhaps a set of lights, or even a brand new crank set, regardless, you will go home with something. So be at Baltimore Bicycle Works (1813 Falls Road) at 6:30. Wear a costume!

the Skully Boom

So I hit up Lief from Skully Boom to see if he could help us out with the Halloween Alley Cat. Graciously, he sent us a few units to give away as prizes and one for review. I left the Black and White ones as prizes and have been riding with this purple guy for a about a week...a very rainy week.

The Little device seems pretty rugged, it held up great in the rain and took a few tumbles. It can handle up to about 85% volume on my i-pod which is plenty loud on the two speakers. It has as clip on the back which worked nicely with my bag. I liked that it didn't need batteries and it charged easily with usb. Overall I think it's a really cool accessory great for riding with a group, or if you don't like riding with headphones but still want to listen to music.

It rained and we still had some 15 people from the start, maybe less. Brian was in town from NY and I didn't get a good picture of him, apparently he was moving to much in my long exposures. He was hardcore pushin' these rides back when they first started and it was cool to have him on a ride years later. Anyway, I really liked this bridge spot near the stadiums, the second pic was taken in total darkness, I just sat my camera on my beer can and got a nice long exposure out of it. Charles and Read St. 10 pm every Wednesday. You can get beer across the street...

We revisited the dirt bowl today and it was awesome. The only thing un awesome was the mosquitos, they were unbearable and I had to go. It's one thing when you are riding but when you sit in the same spot for 5-10 min they tend to swarm up. Sam, Danny, and Jeremiah kept falling in to this hole behind the jump. Most of the time these boards we put over top the hole kept them from falling completely in, but as you can see in a few pictures that wasn't always the case. The set...

This week's murder sessions was a wet one. Sam, Christina and I met up in the rain, and had a really good time. We started at this little bank across from the skatepark, and stayed there for a while. Sam even sprayed some little hampdenite with a puddle, might have been the funniest thing I saw all day. Then we hit up a warehouse parking garage where Sam found a bunch of his 'pets.' After we rolled out of there we braved it and hit up drum city where Christina spent time on new tricks. Hopefully I can put up some shots next time we go out. I hope you're practicing Xtina! For the most part, skate spots translate well into fixed freestyle spots and that's why you've a seen a lot of these spots featured in Keith's photo sets. While at the first stop during the 6 pack ride this past Wednesday, I noticed one dudes knife wasn't very concealable, it had like a 6 inch handle. I wasn't surprised to see someone else carry a knife, I carry one all the time mostly because it's handy, but also because I ride a bike in Baltimore. Our small knife talk turned in to about 10 other people with us showing their knives. One dude even had a box cutter! Now I was surprised. I know there's a lot of mixed opinions about carrying weapons, but thats how people are in an agro city, they consider protection. At least that picture is pretty funny...

Maybe Sam should wear pink more often. We had a good turn out yesterday. Nate was back on his fixie, and the BMX guys even came and rode for a while. Baltimore Spokes on Bob Moore

The memorial ride last week was for Bob Moore. He died at 73 this past May. In 1999 after he retired he hoped on his bike to ride from Roland Park to California with neither a cell phone or a camera, he simply wrote down his progress. I pulled this off my friend Boson's Facebook. This guy Jerry Busnuk is a retired Baltimore Police captain and posted this about the bike robberies. I like what he had to say about people not realizing our future is bikes, and us youngins roaming the city. Honestly I think they just need to boost up the lighting in that "red zone" for starters. Also as much as I hate to say it, Baltimore will never be a big bike city. If you live in points north then you have to be a dedicated cyclist to want to ride back up the hills. It was small, there must have been some 200 people I heard rode on a memorial ride right before we all met for the 6pack ride. I don't know how I am the last to hear about these memorial rides but they always go right over my head. Apparently this guy died from cancer but he was responsible for getting most of the Gwynn's Falls trails done. I can't find any info, sorry.

When I showed up for the ride last night I was blown away. It was a flood watch and severe storm warnings all night and 2 years ago people would have been scared to go out. I figured it would have been a few of us who hang out normally anyway, and we'd just hit a few bars. When I got there it must have been 12 deep plus a few who joined shortly after. The other day I found this crappy pentax 35mm automatic camera in the pouring rain, so I dried it out, put batteries in it and it works. I loaded film in it and shot about half a roll last night during the ride and will try to post those pics up eventually. Next time I'll take a digi, I mean how was I supposed to carry beer AND a camera bag? So tell your friends! WE DON'T ENCOURAGE DRUNK RIDING OR DRIVING! Just a few beers and some fun thats all...

Under The Milky Way

Sam and I rode around in the pouring rain trying to explore a little. We found this awesome community college that looks like the school from Harry Potter. Upon it we found this puddle of 'milk' which Sam wanted to ride through. It wasn't really milk ok. Afterwards we hung at the skate park and met up with Collin and Christina. Before it got dark we hit up the warehouses and made ourselves a bank in the wet leaves where Collin decided to get dirty. Check the set!

Sam, Jeremiah and Collin had a garden party yesterday at the dirt bowl. It was super dusty but they got enough accomplished to spend a few minutes with the little energy they had left to ride it and feel it out. It's still far from finished but the vision is still there. Hey all,

This is Maggie. I'm going to be posting on Bmore Fixed here and there. My favorite color is cyan and I like drinking beer and riding my bike. No tricks here, just riding a lot. I took the summer off from booking free bike movie nights at the Windup Space but keep your eyes peeled for some awesome movie screenings this fall.

I'll be heading out to Seattle, Portland and San Francisco from August 3rd to the 18th. I'm flying my bike out there so I'll be riding the whole time. If there are any bike events out there (they don't have to be fixed gear specific) post the details in the comments section.

Our friend Ryan, who films a lot of local skaters, came out to film with us. We tried to beat the night light but we squeezed in a few hours and a few spots. Should have that footage up eventually, for either a small edit or part of Sam's edit. I'm kinda hoping Collin keeps jumping of ledges, I think he might be getting the hang of it. Monument City Scavenger Hunt

Here are some pics from the scavenger hunt, I tried to hang as long as I could before I had to dip off to go to work. I was banking on going in closer to 9 so I could stay for prizes and what not, but I ended up going in before the race ended at 7. Shane and I just rode to check points to hang and take pics. It certainly was one of the hottest days we've had all year, and I'm sure it discouraged a lot of people but there was still a decent and brave turn out along with some costumes. I still have no clue who won what and who didn't even show up to finish, but I'm sure the pictures Matt took will show up soon. Thanks to Nate and Matt and everyone else for throwing it, it was a really cool set up although I wish more people found Waldo! I do think they needed more time for the hunt, maybe 3 hours. Either way, I hope it happens again next year, maybe make it closer to the fall...
